What are the best fishing spots in Scotland for trout and salmon fishing?

Been hearing lots of great stuff about fishing in Scotland. Wondered if anyone has any insight on the top spots to reel in some trout and salmon? I'm particularly interested in different areas and what type of gear is most effective. Personal experiences, tips, and secret spots are all welcome! Thanks in advance.

If we're talking trout and salmon, there are countless spots in Scotland that can give you the fishing experience of a lifetime. For salmon, the River Tay is Scotland's longest river and is renowned for its excellent salmon fishing. Also, River Spey is incredibly fast-flowing and excellent for fly-fishing.

For trout, I'd recommend the River Clyde. It's often overlooked, but I've found it to be a goldmine for brown trout. Another less-known spot is the St. Mary's Loch in the Scottish Borders. Not only is it beautiful, but it also hosts a rich population of trout.

As for gear, it would greatly depend on the location and kind of fish you're aiming to catch. For fly-fishing, a 9-foot fly rod for a 5–6 weight line can be versatile. Don't forget your waterproof clothing and wading boots, weather can be unpredictable.

Does this match what you guys have experienced? Or do you have other hidden gems in Scotland that are prime for fishing?

Honestly, it's great that Scotland has these spots to fish, but from my perspective, it's not all that it's cracked up to be. Look, the River Tay and River Spey are famous for salmon fishing, for sure. Same with the River Clyde when it comes to brown trout. But we also have to consider the fact that these spots can get super crowded, which really takes away from the tranquility that makes fishing enjoyable for me. Then there's the complexities of Scottish fishing laws, which can be really restrictive in terms of seasons, licenses, and fishing methods. Even though the fishing itself is great – the overcrowding and overregulation can really sour the experience. Or is it just me who feels this way?

Definitely see where you're coming from, but there's been times where fishing in Scotland hasn't quite lived up to expectations for me personally. Interestingly, I’ve spent some time trying my hand at salmon fishing in the River Spey, and while it’s supposed to be one of the greats, I've found it to be hit or miss. Besides, getting there can be a bit of a trek and practically inconvenient. Same with the River Clyde for brown trout. Now, don’t get me wrong, on a good day, it’s a fantastic place to fish, but there can be stretches of time and particular seasons where you don’t catch much of anything. I guess that's fishing for you, though. Additionally, you have to consider the specific fishing laws on these waters. What's been your experience, guys? Are there other areas that might not be quite so fickle?

What you're all saying definitely rings true, but don't you think that's part of the charm, the unpredictability? Besides, isn't it sort of a plus when the sweet spots aren't always crowded? What do you say, am I alone in this thought?

I'm all for unpredictability, but when it's consistently unpredictable, it starts to feel less like a fun surprise and more like rolling the dice, doesn't it? Yet, isn't the surprise part of the allure in fishing? What do you think?

Honestly, unpredictable or not, the hassle just doesn't seem worth the effort to me. Feel like there are easier and more enjoyable ways to fish. Thoughts?

I guess at the end of the day, it's about weighing up whether the potential catch is worth the potential hassle. Anyone got other recommendations for great fishing spots that are a bit less of a gamble?

Guess we all have our own fishing vibes! So, let's agree to disagree or better yet, how about other outdoor sports in Scotland? Any fans for golf or trekking?

Absolutely! If there's one thing that's consistent, it's that Scotland's landscapes never disappoint. Golf, hiking, you name it - it's got the scenery to back it up. Anyone else feel the same?

That's true! Plus, Scotland's weather just adds an extra challenge to those outdoor sports. I mean, golfing in Scottish winds, that’s a game-changer! What are your experiences with this?

Spicy weather, wild outdoors - that's Scotland for you! What's the wildest Scottish weather you guys have braved in pursuit of sports or fun?

Ah, Scotland, never a dull moment!

If it\'s unpredictable, maybe plan for it! Always have a plan B, right?

Oh, plan B? In Scotland, you might need plans C, D, and E just for good measure. Bring a fishing rod, a golf club, some hiking boots and maybe a sled, because who knows, right? One minute you're casting lines, next you're dodging golf balls whisked away by gale-force winds, then you're hiking up a mountain... or was that snowboarding down? Honestly, in Scotland, if the weather's got you guessing, you're probably doing it right. Can someone invent a fishing-golf hybrid sport already? Or does chasing your blown-away umbrella down the street already count? What's your funniest Scottish weather experience?

Oh, let\'s keep our spirits up - half the fun is facing the elements with a good yarn to tell after, right? Oftentimes, the stories of battling the weather become as memorable as the catch itself - or the one that got away!

Absolutely! Part of the adventure is just rolling with whatever comes your way.
