So, I've been thinking a lot about saltwater fishing recently. In my experience, the bait you use really matters and it's not as simple as just picking anything that could swim. What do you all believe are the most important elements to think about when choosing live bait? Like, are there bait types better for different species of saltwater fish or different stages of the tide? Also, how much does the size or color of the bait affect the catch? You know, I've always been more of a believer in the idea that the liveliness of your bait plays just as big a part in attracting fish as the type or size. We're all considering the type of bait and the size, but how about considering its health and vitality? Maybe the fish are picking up on some sort of distress signal from the bait that we're just not aware of. Makes you think, doesn't it? Any experiences backing this up, folks?

Interesting point there, I had another tip shared by an old salt once. He used to say that the way you hook the bait is just as crucial as the bait itself. You got to make sure that it's hooked in a way that permits it to swim naturally - otherwise, it can seem off to the fish, making it less likely to bite. This includes putting the hook through the nose, underneath the dorsal fin, or in the tail, depending on the bait type. Equally, it's crucial not to injure the bait too severely when hooking it because the healthier the bait, the more attractive it is. Does anybody adhere to this theory or do you have different hooking techniques for different baits?

Nah, not sold on that. Can't see water clarity being that significant for the bait choice, especially in those churned-up coastal waters where scent and movement might overpower visibility.
