Introducing the Gillnet

When it comes to fishing, a Gillnet is a key piece of equipment that both beginner and seasoned anglers should be familiar with. A Gillnet, is a type of fishing net used by anglers to catch fish by their gills, hence the name.

How a Gillnet Works

But what makes a Gillnet unique? Well, it's all about the design. The Gillnet is made up of a series of transparent vertical panels of netting, suspended by a float line and weighted by a lead line. The net is almost invisible in the water, causing fish to swim right into it. The netting is carefully sized so that fish can get their heads, but not their bodies, through the net. When they try to back out, their gills get caught in the mesh.

Types of Gillnets

There are primarily three types of Gillnets: Drift nets, Set nets, and Encircling nets. Drift nets float on the water surface and drift with the current. They are best used in waters with strong currents. Set nets are anchored to the seafloor and are left in a fixed place. Encircling nets are used in a purse-seine style, enclosing a school of fish.
